What were the Peloponnesian Wars?
The peloponnesian wars were wars fought between the Greek city states Athens and Sparta and their allies. There were two wars. In the first Athens and Sparta reached a stale mate with neither able to gain an advantage. The second began in the aftermath of the first. Sparta fearing Athens rising power decided to attack again!
In the first war Sparta and Athens fought each other trying to gain superiority and become the most powerful city state in all of Greece. They battle waged on. The Athenian army tried to avoid a full scale battle with the spartans, which they would just about definately have lost. The Spartans destroyed the farmlands on the outskirts of Athens, but Athens used its naval superiority to keep supply routes open. After a huge stale mate. The war was offically ended.
The peace did not last long. The rivalry between Athens and Sparta again began to grow. Just as before a war broke out. It followed the same path as the first war, neither army gaining any advantage, but unknown to the Spartans the city of Athens had been infected by a plague. This left the city open and defensless. So when the Spartans asked the Persians to help. Athens stood no chance. Sparta then became the most powerful city state in all of Greece until they were defeated by Thebes.
