The phalanx was an ancient greek tactic, it involved standing in a line and overlaping shields. The spears would then be placed in the v of the shields. Although the phalanx originated in ancient greece,
most of the greek city states never used it to its full potential. Sparta however perfected it. With their strong discipline the spartan warriors would not break formation at the sight of the enemy!

TO THE LAST MAN.
Spartans where also known for their courage and bravery and their willingness to to fight to the last man. Even when outnumbered 10 to 1 spartans would stay and fight, and most of the time emerge victorious. This was often because of the skills possesed by the spartans compared to those of Athens or the Persians.
